This illustration is of an African woman playing the electric guitar, for the simple reason that you really do not see many black women guitarists in mainstream music. The first that may pop into mind is Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is one of the precursors of rock and roll. There are also awesome guitarists like Lady Bo (sometimes called “Queen Mother of Guitar”), Bo Diddley’s lead guitarist, Odetta, who influenced folk singers like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin; and Elizabeth Cotten, who developed a unique left-handed style of playing the guitar, also known as “Cotten picking”. The image seen here was derived from the influence felt and heard through their music.
